was meint denn ihr, wohin sich uns´re wurzeln tief verästen;
womit sie menschenleib und menschenseele mästen?
von ganz weit drunten, fern von calendarium und uhr,
aus dunkler herkunft, speist sich die kultur
und saugt durch unverwechselbare rohre
das dasein dicht vor alle heut´gen tore.
es ist schon gut - wer wollte es bestreiten? -
die tore breit und auf zu weiten:
das heut´ ist schließlich groß und schön.
doch lasst die tore einzeln steh´n!
ein narr, wer alle schmilzt zu einer pforte!
ein narr, wer alles nennt mit einem worte!
nur narren würden schlichtweg alles integrieren,
ein volk von narren würde gar sich selbst zensieren. -
nur wem´s gelingt, dort in der tiefen herkunft tief zu spüren
und wer es schafft, da alles feine wurzelwerk in einen einz´gen strang zu führen,
wer so die menschen aus dem grund heraus verknüpft,
dem auch sein selbst nicht durch die maschen schlüpft,
der treib den strang durch eine tür ans tageslicht.
wer´s nicht vermag, versuch´ es nicht !

onde pensam então vocês que se ramificam fundas as nossas raízes;
como cevam corpo humano e alma humana?
de uma grande profundeza, longe de calendarium e relógio,
de origem escura se alimenta a cultura
e por canos inconfundíveis suga
a existência até todos os portais de hoje,
é bom decerto - quem diz que não? -
abrir os portais abertos e largos:
afinal então, o hoje é grande e bonito.
mas deixem os portais isolados!
um tolo, quem deles fazer um só!
um tolo, quem tudo chamar por um só nome!
só tolos tudo e todos iriam integrar,
um povo de tolos iria até a si próprio se censurar. -
somente quem consegue lá na profunda origem sentir fundo
e quem consegue de todas as finas raízes uma corda só criar,
quem assim une os Homens no início de todas as origens
e quem mesmo o próprio ser não deixa às malhas escapar,
esse traga a corda à luz por uma porta.
quem não o consegue, não o tente!

will branch?
on what will they be fattening human body and human soul?
from far away down,

only fools would right away integrate everything,

only he who succeeds in feeling deeply
in the deep origin
and he, who manages to collect all the fine roots
into one singular strand,
who connects in this way all the humans
out of one ground,
whose self
does not slip through the loopholes
he may drive the strand through one door to the light of the day.
who is not capable of doing that,
shouldn´t even try!
